To Knit.....or Knot.

Laurie's happiness with knitting finally convinced me to try it again.

That and the fact that Target had a Knitting Kit on sale for $2 this weekend. And the knitting kit came with a Learn to Knit DVD. It was the wine bottle cozy kit. It comes with two colors of this fabulous fuzzy yarn - but more on that later.

So later that afternoon I sat down and put in the Learn to Knit DVD. Let's just say that I do not think this is the easiest way to learn to knit. I think I wore the DVD remote batteries out with all of the pausing and rewinding. It is very hard to learn from a DVD - everything is backwards.

But after 1/2 hour I had mastered Cast On. You heard me - I can Cast On like you wouldn't believe.

So then I tried to move on to the next section of the DVD - Knitting. It includes the English and Continental Methods. I tried this for 2 hours with disastrous results - and lots of knots. I just can not figure it out. I tried watching the DVD on slow motion and I even tried reading the little How To Knit booklet that came with the kit, but I just can not figure it out.

There are 3 problems I am having:
1) I think the furry yarn is not the best choice to learn to knit with. It makes it kind of hard to see the stitches. And it seems to knot very easily.

2)The DVD is very hard - because as I mentioned before everything is backwards.

3)The book is just beyond comprehension for me. I am so lost ya'll.

Mark was laughing at me and said his mom knows how to knit. So I asked her if she would help me - and she said yes - but that it would be difficult because - she is left handed. This is why I was never able to learn from my grandmother - she was left handed too.

Anyways I figure I will give it a shot - I am going to stop by Wal-Mart and buy some cheap non-fuzzy yarn to practice with. Then I will go to mark's mom's house and see if she can help me figure it out.

Wish me luck ya'll.

    Oh! Oh! You're knitting!

Don't get frustrated; it isn't you ... it's the yarn Fuzzy yarns are impossible to learn on. You need a fat, smooth yarn like Lion Brand Wool Ease chunky (or "thick 'n quick) and some big needles, like a size 11 knitting needle.

Then check out this website, they even have video and it's clear and makes sense!

I am so happy you're knitting! ;) Hey, if you were able to cast on, that counts as KNITTING!!!

BTW - isn't there anything I can knit with cast on only?

Just call me master of the cast on!

Just a note to offer some sympathy. I learned casting on and the knit stitch from a person and have been trying to learn the rest from books and it has been HARD. I've not been very successful. It's so damn frustrating isn't it?

Here are some things I find that help:

    1. Crappy acrylic yarn. You can see what you're doing. Once you've got the knit stitch down you can switch to fun fur (or whatever) and make something cute.

    2. Big needles

    3. A steady stream of curse words.

    4. Alcohol. It eases the pain.

    Good luck!

I can't cast on worth a crap. Once I have someone cast on for me I can handle the knit & purl but thats about it.
I've bought Knitting for Dummies in the hopes that will help but have been busy working on crochet projects so I havent gotten to the knitting yet.

I just taught a group of 13 11 to 15 year olds how to knit. Yes, 13. Oy vey. The learning curve with knitting is very steep - you have to learn how to do 3 different things just to get started! I told them, it's just like learning a musical instrument - you have to develop muscle memory. I often would hold their hands and guide them through the motions - that helped a LOT. If I were you, I would find a local knitting store and a real person to help you for a bit. Definitely not fuzzy yarn.
